Revised FORM GST REG-01: Key Changes in GST Registration Application

The GST Portal has introduced an updated version of FORM GST REG-01, bringing significant changes to the GST registration application process. The revised application seeks additional business-related information, introduces new classification options and standardises the documentation requirements for various aspects of registration.

The key amendments and their implications for taxpayers applying for GST registration are discussed below:

1. Addition of One Person Company (OPC) as a Separate Business Category

One Person Company (OPC) has now been included as an independent option under the constitution of business.

Further, applicants must submit relevant documentary evidence supporting their selected business constitution. Depending on the nature of the entity, documents may include a Certificate of Incorporation, Partnership Deed, Registration Certificate or other applicable proof.

2. Introduction of SEZ Entity ID

A dedicated field has been incorporated in the registration application for furnishing the SEZ Entity ID.

This requirement applies to applicants seeking GST registration as an SEZ Unit or SEZ Developer.

3. Additional Particulars for E-commerce Operators under Section 9(5)

The revised REG-01 introduces a separate section for applicants registering as e-commerce operators who are liable to discharge GST under Section 9(5) of the CGST Act, 2017.

Such applicants are required to provide information concerning their physical presence in the respective State or Union Territory. Details of an authorised representative must also be furnished, wherever applicable.

4. Revised Disclosure of Existing Registrations

The particulars relating to registrations already obtained by the applicant have been modified.

The revised application specifically requires details of registrations such as:

  • Goods and Services Tax Identification Number (GSTIN).
  • Professional Tax Registration Number.
  • Professional Tax Enrolment Registration Number.

Other relevant registration details must also be provided, wherever applicable.

5. Revised Classification of Principal and Additional Places of Business

The classification of premises under the Principal Place of Business (PPoB) and Additional Place of Business (APoB) sections has been reorganised.

The revised application provides separate categories based on the nature of possession and use of the premises, including:

  • Own premises.
  • Premises held in the name of a deceased ancestor.
  • Rented or leased premises.
  • Premises used with the consent of the owner.
  • Co-working spaces.
  • Premises located within an SEZ.

The supporting documents required for each category have also been specified. Applicants should ensure that the selected category correctly reflects their possession or occupancy arrangement and that the corresponding documentary evidence is uploaded.

6. Expansion of Nature of Business Activities

The list of business activities in FORM GST REG-01 has been expanded to capture more specific details about the applicant’s operations.

Additional classifications and disclosures include:

  • Factory registration details.
  • Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) particulars.
  • Co-working space activities.
  • Health and fitness clubs.
  • Renting or leasing of immovable property.
  • Renting or hiring of motor vehicles, vessels and aircraft.

Applicants should carefully identify all applicable business activities while completing the registration application.

7. Bank Account Details to Be Furnished

The revised application requires applicants to provide their bank account particulars at the time of filing FORM GST REG-01, wherever such details are available.

A maximum of 10 bank accounts can be reported through the application.

Where bank account information is not available at the time of applying for registration, taxpayers must furnish the same within 30 days from the date of issuance of the GST registration certificate in FORM GST REG-06.

8. Mandatory DIN Details for LLP Designated Partners

For applicants constituted as a Limited Liability Partnership (LLP), the revised application requires the Director Identification Number (DIN) of the designated partners to be furnished.

9. Online Verification of Corporate Identification Numbers

The GST Portal will undertake online validation of the following identification numbers, wherever applicable:

  • Corporate Identification Number (CIN).
  • Foreign Company Registration Number (FCRN).
  • Limited Liability Partnership Identification Number (LLPIN).
  • Foreign Limited Liability Partnership Identification Number (FLLPIN).

The Application Reference Number (ARN) will be generated only after the successful validation of the required information entered in the application.

Conclusion

The updated FORM GST REG-01 introduces several changes aimed at improving the accuracy of registration information, strengthening online verification and ensuring standardisation of supporting documents.

Applicants intending to obtain GST registration should familiarise themselves with the revised requirements and arrange the necessary business, premises, identification and banking documents before starting the application process. Proper selection of business categories and submission of appropriate supporting documents will help minimise errors and avoid unnecessary delays in registration.
