ICAI Introduces Mandatory E-Diary for Articled Training (Effective 1 January 2026)

In view of the rapid digital transformation taking place globally, the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India (ICAI) has introduced a Digital Practical Training Diary (E-Diary) to modernize and strengthen the articled training framework.

The E-Diary has been made mandatory for all CA students commencing practical training on or after 1 January 2026. This digital initiative enables articled trainees to record attendance, work performed, and stipend details in a standardized and transparent manner.

The E-Diary initiative, launched by the ICAI Board of Studies (Operations) in association with the Members and Student Services Directorate, aims to ensure uniformity, transparency, and effective digital monitoring of practical training, in line with ICAI’s competency framework for a future-ready profession.

Objectives of the E-Diary Initiative

  • To digitally record and authenticate practical training experience
  • To map skills and competencies acquired during articleship
  • To ensure consistency and quality in training standards across India
  • To enhance transparency, accountability, and ease of compliance

Key Features of the E-Diary

1. Structured Digital Recording

  • Daily attendance and tasks performed are recorded digitally in real time.
  • Stipend details, once paid, are recorded and displayed within the first fortnight.

2. Fortnightly Submission and Verification

  • Trainees are required to submit details of tasks performed on a fortnightly basis.
  • The system validates completeness and flags incomplete entries.
  • Principals may review and suggest modifications.
  • Trainees must incorporate suggested changes within 7 days and re-submit.
  • Principals must approve within the next 7 days, failing which the entry shall be treated as deemed approved.

3. Edit and Track Facility

  • Trainees can access past entries.
  • Entries may be edited or deleted prior to submission.
  • Approval status can be tracked in real time.

4. SSP-Based Login

  • The E-Diary can be accessed using the student’s Self-Service Portal (SSP) credentials.

5. Process Integration

  • The system is integrated with Form 109 (termination of articleship, if applicable).
  • Records are aligned with ICAI’s practical training and regulatory guidelines.

ICAI President’s Statement

Commenting on the launch of the E-Diary, CA. Charanjot Singh Nanda, President, ICAI, stated:

“The E-Diary will serve as a digitally approved and authenticated record of an articled trainee’s practical experience. It enables students to clearly demonstrate the nature of work performed and areas of expertise developed during training. This initiative will save valuable man-hours for both students and principals, enhance transparency, ensure timely approvals, and help identify emerging areas of training—making articled training more structured, efficient, and future-ready.”
