Revision in E-Way Bill and consolidated E-Way Bill Numbering

Revision in E-Way Bill and Consolidated E-Way Bill Numbering Formats w.e.f. 1 January 2027
To address the increasing volume of E-Way Bills generated on the portal and the anticipated exhaustion of the existing numbering capacity, the authorities have announced changes to the numbering structure of E-Way Bills and Consolidated E-Way Bills.
The revised numbering formats will come into effect from 1 January 2027, as detailed below:
| Document Type | Current Number Format | Revised Number Format |
|---|---|---|
| E-Way Bill Number | 12 Digits | 14 Digits |
| Consolidated E-Way Bill Number | 10 Digits | 11 Digits |
Action Required by Stakeholders
Taxpayers, Goods and Services Tax Suvidha Providers (GSPs), ERP and software solution providers, and API integrators should review their existing systems and implement the necessary changes to support the revised numbering structure.
The required updates may include modifications to:

- ERP and other accounting or compliance software.
Sandbox Testing and Implementation
The revised formats will be made available in the Sandbox environment shortly to enable stakeholders to test their systems and integrations. Further technical specifications and implementation-related information will be communicated through the E-Way Bill Portal.
All concerned stakeholders should complete the necessary system upgrades and testing well before 1 January 2027 to ensure uninterrupted E-Way Bill generation and related compliance activities.
