Review Your Deduction Claims Before 31st December 2025

CBDT Launches NUDGE Campaign: Time to Review Your Deduction Claims Before 31st December 2025
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has issued an important press release today, launching a taxpayer-friendly initiative under the “Non-intrusive Usage of Data to Guide and Enable (NUDGE)” campaign for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26. This move aims to encourage voluntary compliance by allowing taxpayers to review and correct potentially ineligible deduction or exemption claims in their Income Tax Returns (ITRs).
Key Highlights from the CBDT Press Release
- Issue Identified: Through advanced data analytics and risk management, the CBDT has flagged cases where taxpayers may have claimed ineligible deductions/exemptions, leading to understatement of income and wrongful refunds. Common issues include:
- Bogus donations to Registered Unrecognised Political Parties (RUPPs).
- Incorrect or invalid PANs of donees.
- Errors in the amount or nature of deductions claimed.
- Voluntary Correction Opportunity: Affected taxpayers are being notified via SMS and email. They can revise their ITRs by 31st December 2025 without any penalties for voluntary corrections. This reflects a “trust-first” approach, focusing on guidance rather than immediate enforcement.
- No Action Needed for Genuine Claims: If your deductions (e.g., under Sections 80G, 80GGC, or others) are legitimate and properly documented, you don’t need to do anything.
- Positive Response So Far: In FY 2025-26 alone:
- Over 21 lakh taxpayers have updated ITRs for previous years (AY 2021-22 to 2024-25), paying more than ₹2,500 crore in additional taxes.
- More than 15 lakh ITRs have been revised for the current AY 2025-26.
- What If You Miss the Deadline?: From 1st January 2026, you can still file an updated return, but it will attract additional tax liability as per the law.
What Should Taxpayers Do Now?
- Check Notifications: Log into the e-filing portal (incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in) and review any SMS/emails from the Income Tax Department.
- Verify Your ITR: Double-check claims for donations, exemptions, and deductions, especially related to political parties or charitable institutions.
- File Revised ITR if Needed: The deadline for revised returns is 31st December 2025. Acting now can help avoid future scrutiny or enquiries.
- Update Contact Details: Ensure your registered mobile number and email are up-to-date on the portal to receive important communications.
This initiative underscores the Income Tax Department’s shift towards data-driven, non-intrusive compliance, promoting transparency and voluntary corrections. It’s a great opportunity for taxpayers to ensure their filings are accurate and avoid complications later.
If you’ve received a nudge from the department or have doubts about your claims, consult a tax professional soon—the clock is ticking!
