GSTN Announces API Updates for e-Invoice and e-Way Bill

GSTN Announces API Updates for e-Invoice and e-Way Bill Systems Effective 1 August 2026

GSTN has issued an update regarding upcoming changes to the e-Invoice and e-Way Bill ecosystem, particularly affecting API-based integrations used by taxpayers, ERP providers, GST Suvidha Providers (GSPs), Application Service Providers (ASPs), and Invoice Registration Portals (IRPs).

Mandatory Capture of Ship-to GSTIN

As part of the enhancements introduced in the e-Way Bill framework, the Ship-to GSTIN field will be mandatory in transactions involving a separate billing and delivery location (Bill-to/Ship-to model).

Where the consignee is not registered under GST, users will be required to enter “URP” (Unregistered Person) in the Ship-to GSTIN field.

Clarifications for API-Based Operations

Stakeholders had sought clarification regarding the applicability of this requirement in situations where e-Way Bills are generated through:

  • e-Invoice APIs, or
  • e-Way Bill generation using IRN-based APIs.

To address these concerns, GSTN has released detailed guidance covering the necessary modifications in:

  • e-Invoice APIs,
  • e-Way Bill by IRN APIs, and
  • e-Way Bill Closure APIs.

Voluntary Closure of e-Way Bills

The advisory also explains changes relating to the Voluntary Closure of e-Way Bills, including the impact on both portal-based and API-based processes.

Sandbox Availability and Implementation Timeline

The revised APIs and related functionalities have already been deployed in the Sandbox environment for testing purposes. Businesses and technology partners are encouraged to review, test, and update their systems accordingly.

The changes are scheduled to go live in the Production environment from 1 August 2026.

Stakeholders should complete the required system modifications and readiness checks before the implementation date to ensure uninterrupted compliance.
